Michelle Tracey is a scenographer and designer based in Toronto, Ontario. She specializes in set and costume design, but she also enjoys working with lighting and projections. Her work spans the fields of theatre, opera, dance, film & installation art. She earned her BFA Spec. Hon. from York University in Theatre Production & Design, where she received the 2013 Herman Geiger-Torel Award for excellence in design. At York, Michelle was also trained as a wardrobe technician, and she has since constructed costumes for numerous professional productions.
In 2013, Michelle received a Metcalf Foundation Performing Arts Internship Grant to complete a season-long internship in design with Tarragon Theatre. She is continuing her training as a designer with the 2016 - 2018 Soulpepper Academy. Michelle was a nominee for the 2017 Pauline McGibbon Award.
Michelle's design experience has led her to several outdoor and site-specific projects, including the world premiere of M'dea Undone at the Evergreen Brickworks with Tapestry Opera, multiple seasons with Canadian Stage's Shakespeare in High Park, two productions of Convergence Theatre's The Unending, and most recently, a performance residency at the Art Gallery of Ontario with Soulpepper Theatre.
Michelle is a founding member of Triga Studio, a collective of designers committed to artistic exchange and developing new working models in their field. Michelle is also a Member of Associated Designers of Canada (ADC).
Michelle has designed for such companies as Soulpepper Theatre, Canadian Stage, Tarragon Theatre, Tapestry Opera, Theatre 20, U of T Opera, Theatre Smith-Gilmour, Binocular Theatre, the red light district, and Convergence Theatre. Her work on the upcoming Empire Trilogy, produced by Paradigm productions, will be seen on Toronto stages in 2018/2019.
